If you’ve been frustrated in your job for a while, you’ve probably rationalised staying in your rut because you don’t hate it all the time. What bits do you enjoy? One client of mine didn’t enjoy the technical bit of the work they were doing, but they loved thinking about and explaining to the more technically minded she was working with how people would use and interact with their products. She loved that she’d contributed to ensuring the products were a marketable and useable. She had spent a lifetime thinking design was her thing. And it was ... but the people part of design, not the design itself. For me? I love coaching, I love problem solving, I love the complexity of navigating HR’s risk mitigation function and its capacity to enable strategy. I would rather poke my eyes out than do paperwork or organise staff events. If there are bits of your role you can’t stand, think through some cost effective options to take to your boss to reduce them (keep in mind you’ll have to work out how to come up with a plan that’s fair for everyone involved).
